Today is National Sorry Day, the day where Australians acknowledge the mistakes that have been made in the past and celebrate how far we have come as a country.

On the 13th of February 2008 Prime Minister Kevin Rudd officially apologised to Indigenous peoples - specifically the Stolen Generation for "the pain, suffering and hurt".

The first National Sorry Day was held on 26 May 1998, one year after the Bringing Them Home report was tabled in Parliament. The Bringing Them Home report was the final report of the inquiry of the missing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders.

Every year for the past 23 years Australians celebrate the 26th of May to start of National Reconciliation Week (NRW). NRW is the week where we focus on listening to Indigenous peoples and their stories. The purpose of the week is for Australians to learn about each other's cultures and contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia.
